From Source to Tap

Timbutini - In Eswatini, water is a fundamental resource for life, yet millions of people around the globe still lack access to clean drinking water. The Timbutini community, settle in the rich banks of the Umzimpofu River in Manzini, is no exception. The journey of water from its source in the river to the taps in Timbutini home’s illustrated the community struggles and successes in managing this vital resource.

The Umzimpofu River, flowing from the surrounding mountains, serves as the primary water source for the community. Its clean water has historically provided drinking water and water for agriculture. However, with increasing population density and climate variability, the rivers capacity to meet the demands of the community has come under pressure.

According to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eswatini Water Service Corporation (ESWC) Jabulile Mashwama says “the demand for water in the Timbutini area has risen by 40% over the past decade due to population growth and agricultural expansion." Local leaders acknowledge the shifting landscape, with Chief Sizwe commenting, “We have been blessed with this river, but we must also adapt to it changing behavior due to climate. We see higher floods and lower water levels during drought."

Once water is drained from the Umzimpofu River, purification becomes a crucial step. Earlier in 2022, the community relied heavily on traditional filtration methods, often resulting in waterborne illnesses. However, in collaboration with non-government organisations (NGOs), Timbutini successfully implemented a community managed water purification system equipped with Modern filtration technology.

Lindiwe Simelane, a local health worker, shared understanding about the transformation. “Since we established the purification system, the incidence of cholera has decreased significantly. It has been essential for our health and wellbeing".

With purification in place, the next challenge is distribution. The community employs a gravity driven pipeline system that channels water from the purification center to various taps throughout Timbutini. This system, funded by a combination of government assistance and local fundraising efforts, has increased access and reduced the time residents spend collecting water. Community member Samkeliso Mavuso states, “Before, we had to walk miles to fetch water from the river. Now, with taps close to our homes, we spend more time on education and farming".

However, challenges remain. Some taps often run dry, particularly during the dry season when the rivers flow decreases, highlighting the need for sustainable management practices. This issue was addressed during a recent community meeting led by local leaders, encouraging residents to report shortages and engage in conservation practices.

Empowering the community has proven to be a cornerstone of Timbutini water journey. Community forums and consultations are regularly held, allowing residents to voice concerns and contribute to decision making processes. Also, Chief Sizwe emphasized the importance engagement," we are the keepers of our water resources. With everyone's input, we can develop

solutions that reflect our needs".Additionally, community health worker Lindiwe Simelane remarked “it’s crucial for our community members to understand not just the importance of clean water but how to sustain it. Education and collaboration with local leaders have been vital.

The journey of water in the Timbutini community from source to tap is a testament to the dependent and determination of its residents. Through a combination of innovative solutions, community engagement, and strong leadership, Timbutini is on the path to achieving water security. Yet, as climate challenges persist, ongoing efforts will be essential to not only preserve this precious resource but also to sustain the health and livelihoods of the entire community.
