Ugesi Oshisako: From Siphofaneni to Amapiano Stardom; A Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Giving Back

By: Seluleko Dludlu

In the vibrant heart of Eswatini’s Lubombo region lies Siphofaneni, a town that has quietly nurtured many talents. Among them is Sikolwethu Hlatshwayo, known to the world as Ugesi Oshisako; an amapiano artist, DJ, and passionate photographer whose journey reflects resilience, humility, and a deep love for his craft.

Choosing the Beat: A Passion Ignited

Ugesi’s story begins in his hometown, where the rhythms of local music and the influence of neighboring South Africa’s booming amapiano scene ignited his passion. Inspired by South African DJ Maphorisa (Madumane), Ugesi found himself captivated by the genre’s sultry beats and infectious melodies. “Music chose me,” he recalls, “but it was amapiano that truly spoke to my soul.” He entered the Industry in 2018, a young man eager to carve his path. Starting as a DJ and photographer, he quickly realized that producing his own music was his true calling. “I wanted to tell my story through sound,” he says. His dedication paid off, and within a few years, he had collaborated with artists like Selly Win, Mayo, Proudy P, and Pasi the Great.

Building His Brand: From Local Stages to Major Events

Ugesi’s rise has been marked by memorable performances at notable events in Eswatini. He’s performed at Duze High’s Pens Down, Siphofaneni High, and Manzini Central High, captivating audiences with his energetic sets and authentic presence. His performance at Cloud9, Lawu Le Ngwenya, and BK Lodge & Conference Centre further cemented his reputation.

Before taking the stage, he often offers words of encouragement. “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart,” he told the crowd at one event, setting a tone of hope and resilience. His humility is evident; “Humble enough to know I’m not better than anyone,” he emphasizes.

A big Break: The Epic Gig 2024

The pinnacle of Ugesi’s journey is his upcoming performance at The Epic Gig Episode V on June 28, 2024, at Malkerns Country Club. Sharing the stage with South African stars like Kwesta, Emtee, and Usimamane, this event symbolizes recognition of his talent beyond local borders.

“I’m happy to announce I’ve been nominated at Epic Gig 2024 for the FRESHMAN stage,” he shares excitedly. “It means a lot to me because your support since Day 1 has made this possible.” His words echo gratitude and a commitment to continue making music that resonates.

Giving Back: More Than Just Music

Ugesi’s journey isn’t solely about personal success. He believes in giving back to his community and using his platform for positive change. Recently, while promoting the Pick n Pay Eswatini Mbabane Smart Shopper Card with DJs Canjie and Ash, he made a heartfelt detour to Manzini Lifestyle Center. There, he encountered children who often hang around the mall, and he decided to help.

“I know it’s a bad idea to help and expose, but I had to do it,” he admits. He bought bread for a family and sanitary pads for girls who couldn’t afford them. “It’s not about showing off,” he says, “it’s about making a difference, no matter how small.” His actions reflect a desire to uplift those in need, driven by genuine compassion.

A Voice for Change and Recognition

Ugesi’s influence extends beyond music. He’s been appointed the ambassador for Barril De Casa (Casa de Vino), Eswatini’s premier local wine. “Trust me, this is the best local wine produced here,” he affirms, promoting it in all Pick n Pay liquor stores.

His philosophy is simple yet powerful: “Dream it, work that vision, have passion, believe in it.” These words encapsulate his approach to life and artistry. Inspired by figures like Uncle Waffles and Musa Keys, Ugesi hopes to collaborate with them someday, aiming to elevate amapiano’s presence in Eswatini and beyond.

The Road Ahead: Dreams, Collaborations, and Impact

Ugesi’s story is far from finished. He was recently featured on Mayo Ndlovu’s song “Umbulalelani,” which addresses gender-based violence; a testament to his commitment to creating meaningful art. His aspirations include working with international amapiano stars and expanding his reach globally.

“I want to inspire the youth,” he says. “Humble enough to know I’m not better than anyone.” His journey exemplifies how talent, humility, and a heart dedicated to service can create ripples of change.

Closing Notes: More Than Just a Musician

As Ugesi Oshisako prepares for his upcoming performance at Lawu Le Ngwenya, one thing is clear: his journey is a testament to perseverance and purpose. From Siphofaneni to the national stage, his story encourages young artists to chase their dreams, remain humble, and remember their roots.

In his own words, “Dream it, work that vision, have passion, believe in it.” For Ugesi, music is more than beats and melodies; it’s a tool for transformation, a means to uplift others, and a reflection of his unwavering dedication to making a difference.
